Hey Rockers,
On this day in Musical History.......
1954 - Memphis D.J. Dewey Phillips of WHBQ became the first D.J. to play an Elvis Presley record. He was fired from the station one hour later due to his copycat of the crooning singer, gyrating his hips in the studio.
1956 - Johnny Cash made his first appearance on "Grand Ole Opry." It was alleged the young Cash sung “pretty good”, but he ate a fancy meal and smoked a big cigar back stage, much to the detriment of the ladies auxiliary.
1957 - John Lennon and Paul McCartney were introduced to each other. McCartney hated Lennons glasses so much that he spat on them, friends of the Scouse duo allege. Lennon retaliated by kicking Paul in the nuts. McCartney was inspired to write, ‘A Hard Day’s Night’.
1965 - The Jefferson Airplane was formed in San Francisco, CA. Although the name suggests, the band couldn’t really fly like other aeroplanes – only like the other musicians in San Francisco. (Space Dust)…..
1967 - The Monkees opened a national tour with Jimi Hendrix. Obviously that went well cos the Monkees are still around and Jimi is still alive…..
1968 - The Yardbirds disbanded. Just as well – the local media said those guys woudn’t amount to anything…….
1971 - Bjorn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog of Abba were married. Aint love grand? The marriage was over 4 years later and the band split not long after.
1973 - Queen released their first single, "Keep Yourself Alive."
1973 - Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" was released. Must be a theme going this year.
1975 - Keith Richards was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and reckless driving in Arkansas. He was arrested. Another 35 years and what’s changed?
1976 - The Damned made their debut performance at the 100 Club in London. Rat Scabies farted in a fan’s face because the crowd had called him a soft cock. Now that’s punk!
1978 - Eddie Mahoney changed his name to Eddie Money. He then changed his name to Easy Money after a local MP offered him $100 for oral sex.
1980 - The original lineup of Led Zeppelin gave its final show. Lucky for those fans attending that they couldn’t see the future – when the Brittish rockstars would return 28 years later and charge 5 times as much for the privilege.
1984 - The Jacksons began their Victory Tour in Kansas City, MO. It was a victory for the five brothers to have finally broken free of their sister, Latoya.
1999 - Coolio was sentenced to 10 days in jail, 40 hours of community service and two years probation after he pled guilty to a charge of illegal gun possession. ?
2000 - Bobby Brown was released from a Florida jail after serving 26 days for violating probation. The probation stemmed from a 1996 drunk driving incident in Hollywood, FL. ?
2000 - The BBC imposed an early-evening ban on Robbie Williams' newest video entitled "Rock DJ." What the fuck? It used to be sex, drugs & rock’n’roll!
