The Ramones Are Gods! (LINK)
July 9th 2008 06:47
The above title may seem bold to some readers but to the rest of us, it's fact! Whether you accept it or not, these guys are worshipped across our crumbling planet by millions. Yes, that's right. Millions! The beautiful or ugly truth ( as the case may be) is that no other band in rock music's short & battle-worn history, has inspired or influenced so many people to:
A) Play rock music B) Play an instrument C) Form a band D) Play songs that sound like the Ramones or E) Play Ramones songs.
Notorious punk rocker and masochist, Sid Vicious, wanted to do the song, "My Way", like the Ramones - his favourite band. Motorhead wrote a song dedicated to them. Pearl Jam worshipped them. The list goes on. From The Hard-Ons, Spazzys and Mach Pelican in Australia to Teenage Bottlerocket in the US and Chixdiggit in Canada, these bands are a drop in the ocean. There are literally thousands of groups around the globe all belting out Ramones-inspired chords.
This post is not a tribute to the Ramones, but more of a tribute to the tribute bands that want to keep their music alive by taking it to the masses and re-creating the energy and the magic. The magic that for about 34 years has entertained millions of fans and continues to inspire new generations of fans every year.
Three of the standout tribute bands I would like to mention are: Ramines - These guys hail from France and even have a live cd imitating the Ramones - Alive album from '77.
2) Ramonas - four chicks from LA who are babes and live the Ramones dream.
And saving the best for last, the Ramanes - a tight and punchy outfit from Oz, whom I was fortunate to see one drunken summer's night in Geelong. Got to have a beer with them as well. And it was free. Ah... anyway, if you get the chance to see them you are in for a treat - these guys shred.
